As the U.S. Congress begins its sixty day period of reviewing the Iran nuclear deal, American Jews are being tested as never before in their support for Israel.  Will they raise their voices in oppo‎sition to an agreement that Israelis across the political spectrum are firmly against?

In the past, particularly on the contentious issues of Judea/Samaria and land for peace, those American Jews who stood vocally against Israel’s elected center-right government could comfort themselves by pointing to the Israeli left, which has long supported the surrender of Israel’s biblical heartland to the so-called Palestinians in exchange for the promise of peace.

On the issue of Iran, however, there is no such comfort, as Israeli oppo‎sition leader Isaac Herzog has called the Obama administration’s Iran deal “a horrible deal, one that will go down as the tragedy of the ages.”

Nonetheless, some American Jewish organizations are supporting the agreement and urging Congress to approve it. While firmly pro-Israel groups such as AIPAC are strongly opposing the agreement, the hard-left J Street organization has announced a multimillion-dollar national campaign to push forward the rather strange argument that the deal “advances both U.S. and Israeli security interests” and “makes the United States, Israel and the entire world safer.” Not missing a beat, the National Jewish Democratic Council, in announcing its “strong support” for the deal, concludes that it will “ultimately lead to a safer and more secure region.”

Most Israelis and supporters of Israel would find such blatant falsehoods, which I would prefer to believe are based on ignorance, to be shocking, to say the least. Let’s examine the facts. Among other dangerous elements, the now public agreement with Iran will lead to the following:

1. Twenty-four day warnings before each and every inspection of Iranian nuclear facilities is allowed, obviously a very powerful incentive to cheat their way to the nuclear bomb.

2. Immediate removal of sanctions, thereby infusing Iran’s military coffers with billions of dollars, which it will no doubt use to finance its nuclear weapons program, as well as its terror surrogates in the Middle East and around the world.

3. A massive nuclear arms race in the Middle East, as Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Muslim nations will now seek to counter the threat from Shiite Muslim Iran.

So why would American Jews throw their support and money behind an Iran deal that clearly threatens Israel (not to mention the free world and even some Arab nations) with absolute destruction?

Sadly, a substantial portion of the American Jewish community has a knee-jerk devotion to the Democratic Party that is far more passionate than its concern for the survival of Israel. When push comes to shove, they will obediently side with Obama, Kerry, and Hillary against Israel. Their troubling disconnect from their Jewish roots in favor of the religion of dogmatic liberalism is one of the great tragedies of American Jewish life today.

The salvation for Israel and the free world will not come from the Democratic Party, which is already lining up behind Obama in support of a nuclear Iran. Those American Jews who still stand with Israel must now join forces with pro-Israel Christians, with Republicans, and with all other true friends of Israel in the Congressional fight against this dangerous agreement.
