It’s time to take back the Temple Mount

(I submitted this to The Times of Israel on October 18. They rejected it with the comment, “This post is not approved on the grounds that it contains incitement.” Judge for yourself.)

For a century or more, the cry of “the Jews are attacking Al-Aqsa!” has been used to incite Muslims to murder Jews.

Al-Aqsa is “the far-away” mosque in Arabic, and is mentioned in the Qur’an. There is no mention of it being in Jerusalem, but when the Muslims conquered Jerusalem, they identified the Jewish Temple Mount as the site of Al-Aqsa and built a mosque there. This followed the standard practice of Imperialist Islam to build mosques atop the sites that were holy to others.

Today, Muslims refer to the entire Temple Mount as Al-Aqsa, and not merely the silver dome on the southern side of the Mount. This includes the Dome of the Rock, a shrine (not a mosque) with a great golden dome which dominates views of the Temple Mount.

The Muslims are now appealing to the UN to declare the Western Wall part of Al-Aqsa, and a Muslim site. And given the make-up of the UN, there is little doubt that they will do so.

And all we do is whine, “But we aren’t doing anything to Al-Aqsa!” “We aren’t changing the status quo!”

What is the status quo that everyone talks about? It is a ruling made by the Ottoman Sultan Osman III in 1757, declaring that sites considered to belong to Muslims, Jews, and Christians were to remain under the control of those religious groups. The Temple Mount was assigned, according to this ruling, to the Muslims, while the Western Wall was assigned to the Jews. No religion was permitted, according to this ruling, to violate the rights of control and ownership of any other religion to their holy places.

The only time this status quo has been violated was during the 19 years from 1948 to 1967, when Jews were barred from the Western Wall by the Muslim Kingdom of Jordan. Following 1967, Moshe Dayan foolishly returned control of the Temple Mount to the Jordanian Muslim Waqf, which claims that it is an offense against Islam for a Jew to pray, even silently, on the Temple Mount.

No nation on earth would accept such a horrible insult and assault against its rights. No nation on earth would tolerate this abrogation of its sovereign rights over its own holiest site in the name of a “status quo” established two and a half centuries ago by an occupying power. It is shameful that we permit Jewish rights to be violated on the Temple Mount. It is shameful that we allow the Muslims to incite murder against our people on the pretext that their Al-Aqsa is being threatened by us when we are the only people in the region which has protected the holy sites of other religions.

And it has to end.

Israel must complete the conquest that began in 1967. All Muslim authority must be removed from the Temple Mount. The buildings of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock must either be relocated or razed to the ground (Editors Note: only by the Sovereign Government of Israel alone) .

There are those who will say that doing this will be proving the Muslims right. And certainly that is what the Muslims will claim. But it will be done. Finished. A fait accompli. If the Muslims thought they could wipe Israel out, they would have done so already. What holds them back is the knowledge that we’ve beaten them over and over. They fear the humiliation of yet another resounding defeat. Ending the insult of the Muslim occupation of the Temple Mount isn’t going to change that basic fact. And once it is done, they will never again have the battle cry of “Jews are attacking Al-Aqsa”, because there will be no Al-Aqsa for them to worry about.

When the IDF took the Temple Mount in 1967, the famous announcement went out that Har HaBayit BeYadeinu! (“The Temple Mount is in our hands!”) It is time, and long past time, to make that announcement true. It is time to take back the Temple Mount.

For 1 Hour, June 7 1967 the Temple Mount was "In Our Hands"
