Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk is quietly shelving his plans to create a third political party in the United States to challenge the Republican and Democratic Parties, the Wall Street Journal reported.
On July 4, 2025, Musk posted an online survey asking readers to consider the idea that he would form a new party after he strongly criticized the Trump Administration over the "One Big Beautiful Bill."
"Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system," he wrote, "Should we create the America Party?"
The following day, he posted on X: "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."
Originally, Musk planned to have his new party compete in the 2026 midterm elections for the House and Senate.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk's decision not to form the America Party stems from his desire to maintain close ties with US Vice President JD Vance so that he can support Vance in a 2028 presidential run should Vance seek the Republican nomination. However, he has not completely ruled out forming a new political party before the Midterms next November.
