The Knesset plenum voted on Tuesday in the second and third readings unanimously in favor of a bill by the Chairman of the Labor and Welfare Committee, MK Yisrael Eichler, which stipulates that the use of an order delaying departure from the country, against debtors of less than NIS 50,000, will be abolished, except if it is a debt due to non-payment of alimony.

The reasoning provided for the legislation is that no debtor intends to flee the country due to a low debt.

"Many times it is a small debt that is forgotten in a fine or local service that even the debtor is not aware of. Only when he arrives at the airport is he exposed to debt and caught up in a bureaucratic whirlwind," Eichler explained.

Eichler said that "the purpose of the law is not to protect criminals or crooks, God forbid, but to prevent suffering from honest people who only find out at the airport that they have an old debt that has accumulated. We will continue to fight in every way for those poor people who are harmed by the cruel bureaucracy."
