Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced on Friday that he is working "in every way" in order to promote "broad consensus" on the Reasonableness Standard Bill, which would limit the use of the judicial doctrine of reasonableness.

He added that his goal is to "prevent harm to Israel's security and keep the IDF out of the political controversy."

Gallant’s statement followed reports that he is acting to pause the legislative process of the Reasonableness Standard Bill, in the wake of plans by hundreds of IDF reservist pilots to stop serving in the reserves in protest against the judicial reform.

"The situation is very concerning, the legislation needs to be postponed," Gallant reportedly said, according to Channel 12 News.

The report added that Gallant has in recent days held continuous talks with IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and the Commander of the Israel Air Force, from which a difficult picture emerged regarding the situation of the army.

In the last day, Gallant has been working with the heads of the coalition and even with the heads of the parties in the opposition, to bring about an extension of the Knesset summer session by several days.

Such an extension would allow the vote on the cancellation of the Reasonableness Standard Bill to be postponed and would give the parties time to reach a broad agreement on the law.

Several months ago, Gallant publicly called for the legislative process of the judicial reform to be paused in order to allow for negotiations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later fired Gallant over the speech, which had not been coordinated with Netanyahu and was made while the Prime Minister was in London.

A number of Likud officials then attempted to negotiate a compromise between Netanyahu and Gallant and the Defense Minister ultimately was not dismissed.
