President of Israel Isaac Herzog met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Accompanying the president was Leah Goldin, the mother of Hadar Goldin. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan also participated in the meeting.
Hadar Goldin was killed in combat with Hamas terrorists in 2014 during Operation Protective Edge, two hours into a US and UN-brokered ceasefire. The terrorists captured Goldin's body and have been holding it captive ever since, along with the body of an additional IDF soldier, Oron Shaul.
Leah Goldin was also present during the president's address to Congress on Wednesday as a guest of Herzog's. During the address, the president mentioned the bereaved mother and the four Israeli captives of Hamas in Gaza: "Two Israeli officers, Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, and two civilians, Hisham al-Sayed, and Avera Mengistu, are being held hostage by Hamas for years, for the sole purpose of torturing the families they left behind. Lieutenant Hadar Goldin was abducted in violation of a UN-sponsored humanitarian ceasefire negotiated by the United States. His family has been fighting for nine years to bring him home. I asked Hadar Goldin’s mother, Leah, to be here with us today. We pray for her son’s return, as well as the three other Israelis."
