The local committee for planning and construction in the Jerusalem municipality approved 100 housing units Wednesday, in an unusual and rare step to allow large-scale construction for the Arab sector in the capital, Army Radio reports.

The move, slated for Beit Tzafafa, has been made just as Arab terror against Jews and Israelis proliferates nationwide - and a disproportionate number of attackers have hailed from Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem.

"This is either insensitive or from a general lack of understanding," Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Dov Kalmanovitz, fumed Wednesday night to the radio station. "I think this is in error and therefore we will gather some committee members and demand an appeal."

"This is a bitter pill for us - they gave [approval to build to] the Arabs and for the Jews, it's forbidden," he added.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has imposed a freeze on Jewish construction in eastern Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria since late 2013, despite never having made a formal announcement confirming such a decision. Netanyahu only admitted to the freeze for the first time in June.
