The military court on Monday convicted an IDF Major for his role in the death of a soldier who drowned in July 2016.

The officer was found guilty of manslaughter by negligence and sentenced to three months in prison for his role in authorizing the activity in which Ilan Yankelvich died. In addition, the court recommended that the officer not be promoted for three years. The officer pleaded guilty as part of a plea bargain.

Ilan's mother was updated on the details of the arrangement and expressed her agreement to the verdict and the sentence.

In March 2017, another officer with the rank of second lieutenant was found guilty of negligent manslaughter in his handling of the activity. The officer's rank was lowered and he was given a suspended sentence.

The trial of another second lieutenant involved in the incident is still underway.
