Lebanese army intelligence arrested Majed bin Muhammad al-Majed, leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades terror group, the Ya Libnan website reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, Majed resided in a camp for people who are registered as “Palestinian refugees” for a few years before leaving for Syria a month ago where he pledged allegiance to the leader of the jihadist Al-Nusra Front rebel group.
Majed is wanted by the U.S. on terrorism charges, according to Ya Libnan.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades recently claimed responsibility for the attack on the Iranian embassy in Beirut. The attack killed 23 people, among them an Iranian attaché, and wounded an additional 146.
The same group also claimed responsibility for the recent killing of top Hezbollah leader Hassan al-Lakiss. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the killing, and its leader Hassan Nasrallah recently threatened to "punish" Israel for it.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades’ previous attacks include rocket fire on Israel. The group has attacked northern Israel multiple times over the past four years.
It is unknown whether the group is responsible for Sunday’s Katyusha rocket attack on northern Israel.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon warned Lebanon to monitor its own citizens carefully following the attack, and IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz has said he holds the Lebanese Army directly responsible for it.
