A 38-year-old woman was killed Saturday night in a “hit and run” collision in Akko. Two young children who were in the car with her were wounded, and are in moderate condition.

A man in the car suffered light wounds, as did two passengers in a nearby car.

The driver who caused the collision apparently drove through a red light and slammed into two cars. He then fled the scene, heading east on Highway 85.

The crash took place at the Home Center junction in Akko. The wounded were taken to Nahariya hospital.

The Knesset’s Constitution and Law Committee recently approved a proposal that would double the maximum sentence for leaving the scene of an accident, and would allow judges to punish passengers in the offending driver’s car as well.

The proposal followed a number of high-profile hit-and-run crashes recently including a case in which a French tourist hit and killed a young woman in Tel Aviv, then fled to his home country.
