Nikki Haley, former US ambassador to the United Nations and former governor of South Carolina, announced her candidacy for president on Tuesday.
Haley delivered the announcement in a video statement, making her the second Republican to join the 2024 presidential race, after former President Donald Trump launched his presidential bid last November.
“I’ve never lost an election, and I’m not going to start now," said in her campaign launch Tuesday.
In the video, Haley touted her tenure as governor and foreign policy bona fides as ambassador.
"China and Russia are on the march. They all think we can be bullied, kicked around. You should know this about me: I don't put up with bullies. And when you kick back, it hurts more if you're wearing heels."
Haley, 51, also highlighted the generational difference between herself and her sole current rival for the Republican nomination, Trump, who will be 78 on election day 2024.
"Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. That has to change. Joe Biden's record is abysmal, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. The Washington establishment has failed us over and over and over again."
"It is time for a new generation of fiscal leadership to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border, and strengthen our country, our pride, and our purpose."
