Rav Steinman and the Gerrer Rebbe are visiting Orthodox Jewish communities in the U.S., Canada and South America – but Montreal, Canada has been crossed off the list.

The Jewish community in Montreal lost its chance to host the two leading hareidi-religious figures in Israel after a spate of protests and planned demonstrations prompted the rabbis to cancel their visit there.

The Satmar hassidim and the local Eida Haredit/Neturei Karta faction had applied for and received a permit from the Montreal police to stage a protest in front of the place where Rav Steinman was to have stayed during his visit.

Rabbi Moshe Menachem Timaur, the head of the Satmar community in Montreal, also called for demonstrations against Rav Steinman “to prevent the entrance of impurity,” according to local reports.

Rav Steinman has been criticized by a number of hareidi-religious leaders for his support of the law known as the Tal Law, which was upheld this month by the Supreme Court. The law regulates the exemption of yeshiva students from army service, but stipulates that they must serve in the army under certain conditions. Rabbi Steinman's representative, former Bnei Brak mayor Mordechai Karelitz, participated in the panel that drafted the law.

The law in question provides for IDF deferments for yeshiva students who wish to continue advanced Torah studies for four years. The students may then take a “year of decision” to decide whether to enter the armed forces, get a job, enter a vocational training program or continue with yeshiva studies.

The rabbi has also been condemned for his support of professional training programs for hareidi-religious students and the hareidi-religious Nahal unit of the IDF.

The Satmar chassidic sect and the Eida Hareidit/Neturei Karta sect refuse to recognize the state of Israel.

Neturei Karta leader Moshe Ber Beck was also expected to organize demonstrations against the Rabbi. Beck has met in the past with Palestinian Authority terrorists and supported their efforts to liquidate the Jewish state.
