The third letter Netanyahu should write to the EU

This is what Netanyahu has not yet written to Jean Claude Juncker, EU Commission Head: Instead of planning bogus Peace Conferences on the Middle East, perhaps Europe should tend its own flocks.

Dear Mr. Juncker,

Israel had not been verbally attacked by the European Union for a few weeks. I thought that must be because of your own serious problems. I was mistaken. The EU has now expressed its strong opposition to our regulation law.[3]

One of my staffers thinks that if there is no opposition or condemnation of Israel for three months by the EU, this is a major indicator that your organization is falling apart. I explained to him that political analysis is not so simple. In the meantime, the junior staff member who follows the problems of the EU for me has said that he cannot cope anymore and needs an assistant in order to keep up with all of the EU’s setbacks.

In an interview with the German daily Die Welt you said that you have great worries that the Americans do not feel as responsible for Europe’s security as they have in the past. You said that the British and French armies are the only ones in the EU which are operational. You also mentioned that in the EU there are 154 different weapon systems, while in the US there are only 27.

I had a good laugh about your remark “Today in terms of military capabilities a heap of chickens is a full fighting unit compared to the European Union.”[4] I do not know whether you are capable of imagining what Israel’s situation would be if we were militarily in as miserable a state as you’ve described that of Europe. In the meantime, the Civil Contingency Agency in Sweden has ordered local councils to make preparations for a possible military attack. It is evidently a reaction to increased Russian belligerence.[5]

Your deputy, First Vice President, Frans Timmermans, has publicly stated that the EU might dissolve, saying: “We have fallen into the trap of identity politics. If the driving force of the European construction is national, cultural or ethnic identity, then it will not survive. For the first time in 30 years, I really believe that the European project can fail.”[6]

Manuel Valls, who from March 2014 until recently was Prime Minister of France, has also made ominous remarks. He said that the leader of the French anti-European National Front party, Marine Le Pen, stands a chance of winning next year's presidential election in France, boosted in part by Mr. Trump's shock win in the US.[7]

The Finnish Economics Nobel Prize winner, Bengt Holmström, has said that the EU has to be reconceived and started anew. He added that one should forget ambition and concentrate on what is essential.[8]

I commiserate with you on the result of the Italian referendum, where reform of the political system was voted down. The possibility cannot be excluded that Italy will have an election, nor that the people who want to take Italy out of the Euro, the Five Star Movement, may win that election.[9] Nowadays Italy is somewhat of a risk for Europe.

Frits Bolkestein is a former Dutch EU Commissioner and Dutch Defense Minister. He says that the Eurozone is a failure as the economic differences between southern and northern Europe are too big.  Bolkestein thinks that a northern European enlarged D-Mark currency will replace the Euro.  It will be adopted by Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria. The big question is whether France will belong to the new currency area. If not, the political bond between France and Germany will fade away.  This is currently the main axis of the European Union.[10]

EU economics are not going well either. David Lipton, the First Managing Director of the IMF has said, that he worries “about the challenge of Europe dealing with its growth, or the legacies of crisis and the need for continued architectural improvements, including completing the banking union which has advanced substantially but remains unfinished.”[11]

Perhaps you could ask Mr. Weber, as the EU regularly interferes in Israel’s affairs, why it is wrong that the UK -- even after its exit from the European Union – will continue to interfere in your long-term affairs.
The Berlin market attack was the most recent major terror attacks in Europe since my last letter. In addition, an Afghan refugee who raped and murdered a young woman in Freiburg, Germany, was previously convicted for murder in Greece and released after a much reduced period in jail there.[12] A twelve year old boy with Iraqi roots tried to detonate a nail bomb in a Christmas market in the German town of Ludwigshafen.[13]

Besides that, there have been a number of arrests of plotters of terror. Just to mention a few here - in France seven suspected jihadis were arrested.[14] In Germany it turned out that an intelligence officer was an Islamist.[15] In the Netherlands it has now become known that many months ago, a forty year Moroccan suspected head of a terrorist cell was arrested. They had planned to bomb a synagogue in Amsterdam as well as another target.[16] In the Dutch Parliament there was much criticism that the incompetence of the intelligence services enables the jihadists to operate.[17]

We follow also with interest the position of the Slovak government which wants to prevent the entrance of Muslims and the building of mosques. When one of the EU’s Muslim employees visits your member country, Slovakia, he will not find any place to pray.[18] If he comes to Israel, of course, there is ample choice.

A statement which I found particularly interesting was made by the head of the largest European parliamentary group, Mr. Manfred Weber. He has attacked British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson for urging the UK to refrain from getting involved in decisions about the EU’s long-term future. He said “I ask the British government not to influence this discussion, which will go on over the next two, two-and-a-half years. Please step back; it is a question of fairness and respect. When you want to leave a club, you have no say any more in the long-term future of this club.” [19]

Perhaps you could ask Mr. Weber, as the EU regularly interferes in Israel’s affairs, why it is wrong that the UK -- even after its exit from the European Union – will continue to interfere in your long-term affairs.  If that would be wrong, then this would be a double standard against Israel, which would be anti-Semitic according to the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance which required the approval of almost all EU countries.[20]

To refer to your heap of chickens: the chickens have come home to the EU to roost. Perhaps as outsiders we can be of help to remedy at least part of your dire situation.
