A new US $1 coin featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump went on sale Wednesday as part of the celebrations of the United States' 250th anniversary, the BBC reports.
The US Mint said the commemorative coin bears Trump's portrait alongside the words "Liberty" and "In God We Trust." The coins are being marketed as collectibles rather than for everyday circulation.
Although federal law prohibits living presidents from appearing on US currency, a provision in legislation concerning the 250th anniversary provided a way for the Trump design to be used.
The Mint priced a roll of 25 coins at $61 and a bag of 100 at $154.50. Within hours of the launch, both were listed as "not currently in stock" on the Mint's website, which said additional coins were being produced. The coins were also available through vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, DC.
The Mint described the coin as having been "created to celebrate this historic national milestone" and featuring a "once-in-a-generation anniversary design destined to become a standout addition to modern collections".
Despite their golden appearance, the coins contain no gold. The Mint said they are composed of 88.5% copper, with the remainder consisting of zinc, nickel and a manganese brass outer layer.
The commemorative coins are not being circulated for regular transactions, but they are still considered legal tender and can be used to pay debts and taxes. Federal law, however, allows businesses to decide whether to accept them.
The new coin follows other plans to feature Trump's image on US financial and government documents. In May, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said his department was preparing a new $250 bill bearing Trump's portrait.
The Treasury also announced in March that Trump's signature would soon appear on US paper currency, another first for a sitting president.
In April, the US State Department announced plans for a limited-edition American passport commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary. The redesigned passport is also set to include a portrait of Trump.
