The Eida Haharedit has called to renew protests over haredi enlistment in the IDF, timing the next protest
In an official letter bearing the stamp of the Eida Haharedit rabbinical court and titled, "My young men have gone into captivity," the extremist rabbinical leadership called on the haredi public to take to the streets om Sunday and demonstrate in Jerusalem.
In the strongly worded document, the signatories warn of the alleged consequences of reporting for military service and state that in light of measures being advanced by law enforcement authorities and the IDF, "our only power is with our mouths, to cry out and warn."
Accordingly, married yeshiva students and public activists who are able to participate in the protests are called upon to do so "in accordance with Torah law."
In fact, Torah law does not require or demand participation in such protests.
In addition to calling for demonstrations in the streets, the letter also instructs local activists to approach young men directly in an effort "to persuade the young men not to stumble and not to cast themselves into a place from which none who enter return."
The Eida Haharedit also stressed that the public campaign against mandatory military service will not end on Sunday and is expected to continue and intensify in the coming period, coinciding with the period when Selichot prayers are recited and preparations for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
The letter concluded with a prayer and the hope that steadfastly defending tradition will lead to the removal of the "decrees" and the "coming of the righteous redeemer."
