Vandals destroyed three dozen headstones at a Jewish cemetery in Istanbul, according to the Turkish Chief Rabbinate Foundation.
“Our Hasköy Cemetery was [broken into] at midnight, and 36 of our tombstones were destroyed,” the Turkish Jewish Community said on Twitter.
“The matter has been conveyed to the relevant authorities with all the pictures and night recordings, and we expect the perpetrators of this vandalism to be caught as soon as possible.”
The government denounced the incident through a spokesperson for the Turkish president, Turkish Jewish news site Salom reported.
“The relevant authorities have taken action to locate the perpetrators. We shall never allow those who attack sacred values and try to sow seeds of chaos and hostility in our society,” the spokesperson said.
