One person died and at least three other were wounded in a sword attack at a school in central Sweden on Friday. Police later arrested a suspect, reportedly a student at the school, although the motive for the attack remains unknown.
The incident took place at Brinell School in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm. Classes were underway at the upper secondary school, which has approximately 400 to 500 students.
Police received an alarm early Friday afternoon and immediately sent officers to the scene. Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad told the TT news agency that investigators would examine available surveillance footage as part of the investigation.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident on X as a "serious incident" in Fagersta that occurred "right after the summer break."
"There are reports of injured people. We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively," he added. "Our thoughts are with all those affected."
Several nearby schools were placed under lockdown, while authorities established roadblocks in the area.
The attack comes after several high-profile acts of violence in Sweden in recent years. Last year, about 10 people were killed in a shooting at an adult education center, in what was described as the country's deadliest gun attack.
In 2015, a masked attacker motivated by racism killed a teaching assistant and a student and wounded two others.
In 2017, a truck was driven into a busy shopping street in Stockholm, killing five people.
