Jordanian officials have signaled to Israel that the kingdom is interested in revisiting the renewal of the “Prosperity” water-for-energy project aimed at easing Jordan’s severe water crisis and strengthening regional cooperation.

The project is a regional initiative involving Israel, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to Kan News, the framework of the project includes Israel selling approximately 200 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually to Jordan. In exchange, Israel would purchase about 600 megawatts of green energy, generated at a solar farm that the UAE would construct in Jordanian territory.

In recent months, professional sources in Jordan have reportedly recommended that the government reconsider reviving the project due to the worsening water crisis in the kingdom, which is considered one of the driest countries in the world.

During the war against Hamas in Gaza, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi froze the project. However, following the cessation of the fighting, calls are growing within Jordan to resume talks with Israel - at least behind the scenes - in order to prevent the collapse of water supply systems next summer.
