MK Alon Schuster (Blue and White) confirmed a report on Kan 11 News on Wednesday evening that the chairman of his party, MK Benny Gantz, is considering returning to the government.
Speaking to Kan Reshet Bet radio, Schuster indicated that Blue and White would join the government if doing so would ensure a majority for approving a potential hostage release deal.
"There are currently no talks about joining the government, but if we understand that this is what will lead to the release of hostages, that’s what we’ll do. What do they expect? That we let the hostages die?" he said.
The Kan 11 News report had indicated that Gantz is considering returning to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government ahead of Ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich's expected opposition to the hostage deal that is currently being discussed.
According to the report, Gantz, who joined the government at the onset of the war and subsequently resigned, consulted with political officials regarding the offer to return to the government to facilitate a hostage deal.
The consultations centered around the question of whether the move would be right for Gantz, especially in light of Smotrich and Ben Gvir's opposition to a partial deal that would not return all the hostages.
So far, the politicians in the opposition have spoken about providing a "safety net" which would support Netanyahu in agreeing to a hostage deal, but recently, the possibility of Gantz joining the government under certain conditions arose.
