Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky has recommended that Israelis refrain from traveling to Uman, Ukraine, this year.

Many Israelis who follow the Breslov leader Rabbi Nachman, obm, travel to Uman every Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), and hold the holiday prayers and festive meals at the gravesite of their teacher.

Speaking to Yediot Aharonot, Brodsky said, "This week I held talks on the matter with the leaders of the Ukrainian government. The decision regarding Rosh Hashanah has not yet been made. It's important to emphasize that Ukraine is in a war and it will be very hard to ensure the safety of the worshipers."

"Therefore, regardless of what Kyiv decides, this year I would recommend that all Israelis refrain from traveling to Ukraine."

Brodsky added that, "There are almost no Jews remaining in the areas which were conquered by Russia."

When asked about his own relationship with the Ukrainian ambassador to Israel, Brodsky told Yediot Aharonot, "On a personal level, we have a very good relationship. At the same time, sometimes his criticism of Israeli is not justified and even harms the relationship between the countries. I am concerned about the situation of the relations, and am doing everything in order to strengthen the friendship and appreciation between the two nations."
