The Meretz Election Commission announced on Thursday evening that the primaries for the party leadership and the slate for the Knesset will be held on August 23.

Meanwhile, former Meretz chairwoman Zehava Galon is contemplating a return to politics ahead of the elections for the 25th Knesset.

In recent weeks, Galon has been under heavy pressure to return to the party, both by Knesset members and by prominent figures on the Israeli left, in light of many polls showing that Meretz does not pass the electoral threshold.

The working assumption of those people who are pressuring Galon is that should she run, the chances of the party passing the electoral threshold will increase.

According to a report by Sefi Ovadia on Channel 13 News, polls predict that Galon strengthens Meretz's power. She is expected to make the final decision next week, and at the moment it appears as though she is leaning towards returning to politics and run against Yair Golan in the primaries for the party leadership.

Earlier this week, Health Minister and current Meretz chairman Nitzan Horowitz announced he will not seek reelection as head of the party.

Despite withdrawing from the leadership race, Horowitz said Tuesday that he will remain on the party’s Knesset slate for the upcoming election.
