Hate crimes in New York City have risen by 15.8 percent year over year in the first year of Zohran Mamdani's term as mayor, the New York Post reported, citing NYPD statistics.
425 hate crimes have been recorded in the first eight months of 2026, compared to 367 in the same period last year.
The wave of antisemitism has fueled much of the rise in overall hate crimes. Antisemitic hate crimes are up eight percent year over year, and account for the majority of all hate crimes committed in New York City.
Despite the rise in hate crimes, the NYPD recorded a significant drop in overall crime, as well as a six percent drop in major crimes such as murder.
The report comes shortly before the start of the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur.
Last month, a man attacked Manhattan's Central Synagogue during Shabbat services, injuring a worshipper and damaging property.
In another incident in August, six local youths attacked a local haredi man in Borough Park and threw eggs at him.
A Jewish man was stabbed in July outside a synagogue on Tisha B'Av.
