American military forces deployed two Hellfire missiles against a Panama-flagged commercial cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Tuesday after the vessel's crew disregarded verbal commands and continued heading toward an Iranian harbor, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed.
In an official statement published on social media, CENTCOM wrote, “Earlier today, CENTCOM forces disabled the steering gear of Panama-flagged M/V Vela Nova as the cargo vessel attempted to transit the Gulf of Oman and violate the US blockade against Iran by sailing toward an Iranian port. A US Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two hellfire missiles into the Vela Nova’s engine room after the ship’s civilian crew ignored repeated warnings from American forces."
CENTCOM further reported. “The ship is no longer transiting to Iran in violation of the U.S. blockade, which remains in full effect. As of Aug. 11, CENTCOM has redirected 55 commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade, disabled 3 non-compliant vessels, and boarded 2. U.S. forces operating in the Middle East are highly vigilant, lethal, and ready."
The naval enforcement measures were originally implemented by Washington on April 13 following a breakdown in peace negotiations in Islamabad. Intended to restrict Iranian petroleum exports and maritime commerce, the operational framework gives CENTCOM authority to intercept vessels entering or departing Iranian ports, sustaining heightened economic and geopolitical friction across Persian Gulf shipping lanes.
While a temporary 60-day memorandum of understanding was concluded between Washington and Tehran in June to suspend the embargo in exchange for unhindered merchant vessel navigation, American authorities reinstated the maritime blockade last month in response to renewed military skirmishes and attacks on regional shipping.
Tuesday's military action transpired one day after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei signaled that reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains contingent on Washington fulfilling specific Iranian demands.
"As long as the US naval blockade continues, along with its other violations, the necessary conditions will not exist for us to say that the Strait of Hormuz has become an open international waterway," Baghaei asserted.
"The United States must end these actions and compensate for the damage. Only afterwards can we begin discussing the next steps," he added.
US President Donald Trump was asked by a reporter on Monday about his previous comments warning that the current negotiations with Iran represented its final chance before "decapitation," and was pressed on what comes next.
“You’ll find out," Trump replied. Asked whether a massive escalation remains on the table, Trump added, “Well, we certainly have that ability if we want to do that. You’ll find out."
