Two suspects were arrested yesterday following a Border Police pursuit after a suspicious vehicle broke through the Hizma Crossing while attempting to evade security forces. During the escape, the vehicle ran over a spike strip and collided with a civilian vehicle at the crossing.
Border Police officers from the Jerusalem Envelope Unit and Crossing Points Unit spotted the suspicious vehicle as it approached from Judea and Samaria toward Jerusalem. The officers signaled the driver to stop for inspection, but according to police, he instead attempted to flee the scene.
In response, the officers deployed the spike strip positioned at the crossing, and the fleeing vehicle ran over it. During the escape, the vehicle also struck a civilian's car that was at the crossing at the time.
Following the escape, Border Police officers from the Jerusalem Envelope Unit and the Jerusalem Border Police launched a pursuit and search operation for the suspects. During the operation, the two were located at the entrance to the Issawiya neighborhood in eastern Jerusalem while traveling in a different vehicle.
The forces arrested the driver of the second vehicle, a Jerusalem resident suspected of transporting the other suspect. The second suspect is an illegal resident from Hebron.
The vehicle used to break through the checkpoint, which is suspected of being stolen, was later found in the Beit Hanina neighborhood.
Both suspects were transferred to the Jerusalem Envelope Border Police Investigations and Intelligence Unit for further questioning.
