The Chief Rabbi of Safed, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, harshly attacked the President of the Supreme Court, Justice Yitzhak Amit, over the decision to convene and approve a left-wing demonstration on the Sabbath.

“Yitzhak Amit, acting President of the Supreme Court, thinks he is not subject to the law. The State of Israel is a Jewish state-this is written in the Declaration of Independence-and this state established the Sabbath as a day of rest. He thinks that over something trivial like a protest, which was apparently coordinated in advance between him and the petitioners, he can desecrate the Sabbath and cause mass Sabbath desecration in the Supreme Court," Rabbi Eliyahu said.

He stated: “What he did is a very serious attack. Because now religious judges cannot be there in the Supreme Court. They will all be progressive and liberal. This is not our court-it is his court and that of his associates. If there was any doubt whether this person is suitable, it has become clear that he is completely unsuitable. He must vacate his position. You don’t need a D9 bulldozer to destroy the system."

"We need a judicial system-but with decent people, not like him and not like the system around him, which is simply terribly corrupt," Rabbi Eliyahu concluded.
