The Shin Bet has received a court order to transfer a Jewish detainee who has been held in harsh conditions to a prison with better conditions, it was cleared for publication today (Wednesday).
The detainee, a settler who was arrested following the terrorist attack near Eli two weeks ago, has been held for ten days.
During a court hearing, it was revealed that the detainee was imprisoned in a tiny room with intense lighting for 24 hours a day and that interrogators would subject him to intense changes in temperature from hot to cold and back again.
Magistrate's Court Judge Amir Shaked said at the hearing that he recommends that due to the unusual prison conditions the detainee has been subjected to so far, he be transferred now to superior prison conditions. The court extended his detention by four days, less than the six days requested by the Shin Bet.
Attorney Nati Rom of the Honenu legal organization, which represents the detainee, said: "The Jewish department of the Shin Bet and the Nationalist Crime faction of the Judea and Samaria Police Department have become a public relations office, arresting a man on suspicion of throwing a Koran after an attack, holding him in a dirty dungeon and in harsh conditions, with light 24 hours a day, when his body is frozen and burned alternately, abuse for the sake of it - when on the other hand, almost no suspicions were leveled at him, and the whole purpose of the arrest is to break his spirit and for media purposes."
"Dozens of similar vandalism cases, and TikTok videos and incitement from the Arab side with similar suspicions, do not make it to the investigation stage at all and certainly do not become Shin Bet investigations. This is a disgrace and shame, every citizen in Israel must be concerned about this conduct. Selective enforcement is a major issue, and we hope that the persecution of the settlers will stop immediately," he said.
