MK Shalom Danino (Likud) explained in a conversation with Israel National News his position regarding the necessity of a representative from the opposition being a member of the Judicial Selection Committee.
"In my opinion, the officials elected by the people are the ones who should appoint the judges. The elected officials include those from the opposition, so we need to do it together. We should not look as if we were pushed into it or bowed to it after they supposedly threatened us with leaving the talks at the President’s Residence," said Danino.
"This is not a reward for the protests,” he clarified, “but rather a democratic principle that needs to be adhered to. I think that we as a ruling party are expected to adhere to our principles. We, in the Likud, are full of love and not of hate."
In conclusion, Danino commented on the issue of the passing of the judicial reform, saying, "I am sure we will see changes in the legal system. If we achieve 60-70% of the reform, that will be plenty. This is what we stated from the beginning - that the reform went into [discussions at] the committee and it will not come out the same way. I do not see this as a contradiction and we should not go into 'principles' of all or nothing. The unity of Israel comes above everything else."
