The former editor of the Brooklyn-based Jewish Press newspaper was charged with two felonies on Thursday for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Politico reported.

Elliot Resnick was charged with civil disorder and impeding police officers for allegedly grabbing the arm of a Capitol police officer while holding back the doors of the Capitol building rotunda, prosecutors said. Once the doors were breached by rioters, he allegedly stayed behind at the entrance and aided other rioters entering the building, they added.

Resnick was also charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building, and disorderly or disruptive conduct in a Capitol building, both misdemeanor counts.

Resnick was identified in a video of the Capitol breach by an anonymous researcher, first reported by Politico.

Resnick later wrote about the Jan. 6 incident without disclosing that he participated.

“Democrats keep on declaring that never again can this country see its Capitol overtaken by a mob,” he wrote in a post from March 17 on the website American Thinker. “Well, there’s an easy solution for that. Don’t steal elections in plain sight, and maybe ordinarily law-abiding citizens won’t snap.”

Resnick was a longtime supporter of former President Donald Trump, who claimed that he lost to Joe Biden in November 2020 because the voting was rigged.

In the video, Resnick can be seen stumbling as he enters the Capitol building through a doorway while a Capitol police officer tries to keep out the intruders. He reappears a few minutes later, his face clearly visible, standing nearby as another rioter shouts at a Capitol police officer.

The agent heading the case was quoted in the charging documents as saying she was “aware of and has complied with the US Department of Justice’s News Media Policy,” guidelines that mandate rules and limits on how prosecutors conduct investigations and charge members of the media, according to Politico.

The court filing stated that investigators reviewing CCTV footage, as well as videos filmed by the media and rioters, believe that Resnick was present in the Capitol for around 50 minutes.
