The IDF search and rescue delegation has concluded its efforts to rescue trapped civilians from the disaster sites of the earthquakes in Turkey as part of the "Olive Branches" humanitarian aid delegation.
The delegation began its activities on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, following the earthquakes that occurred in southern Turkey last week which killed and injured thousands of people.
The search and rescue delegation consisted of more than 160 participants who worked non-stop in cooperation with the Israel National Security Council, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Fire and Rescue Authority and the local search and rescue teams, in a determined effort to help those affected by the disaster.
During six days of continuous search and rescue efforts, the delegation rescued 19 people from the disaster sites, the youngest of whom was a two-year-old baby and the eldest a 65-year-old man.
The delegation returned to Israel aboard IAF aircraft.
While the IDF search and rescue delegation returned to Israel, the medical aid delegation in Turkey will continue to rescue lives and treat the injured.
Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, said: “Members of the ‘Olive Branches’ search and rescue delegation, welcome back. We have all been following every rescue activity you carried out and every person you saved.
"In the midst of a terrible human tragedy, you brought immense pride to the IDF and the State of Israel. I am extremely proud of you. When we were examining the possibility of organizing and sending an aid delegation to Turkey, I was told it was already being organized - both current servicemembers and reservists immediately rose to the task. They just heard of the earthquake and came on their own accord, willing to leave everything in order to assist in this important mission.
"You operated with professionalism and determination and saved lives. The mission is not complete yet - our hospital still operates and saves lives in Turkey.
"I hold a great appreciation for you all and especially for you, COL Golan Vach, for commanding the search and rescue delegation. I would also like to thank all IDF active and reserve duty servicemembers and civil service personnel who participated in the delegation and your families. One mission, shared values and professional activity. You represented the IDF and the State of Israel with great honor. "
Commanding Officer of the Home Front Command, MG Rafi Milo, said: “The ‘Olive Branches’ delegation has completed six days of activity, rescuing 19 babies, children, adults and elderly civilians.
“This is a first-rate national mission, which the reservists quickly joined as well, leaving their jobs and their families to contribute their lifesaving abilities. I am proud of my people and salute them for their dedication, kindness and professionalism."
Commanding Officer of the National Rescue Unit and the IDF search and rescue delegation, COL (res.) Golan Vach, said: "Following six intensive days, the IDF search and rescue delegation has rescued 19 people who were trapped under the rubble and is concluding its activities in Turkey."
“I am proud to lead this delegation of professional and moral individuals. Each of its 160 members, the majority of whom are reservists who left their daily lives behind, worked around the clock under difficult conditions to rescue survivors and save lives. I consider it an honor to assist a fellow nation and its people in their time of need. We will continue operating in this manner on behalf of the IDF and the State of Israel and provide assistance wherever it is required."
