The members of the Iranian women’s futsal team refused to sing the Iranian national anthem at the 2023 CAFA Women's Futsal Championship which was held on Monday, footage posted to social media showed.

The team subsequently defeated Uzbekistan 5-4 to win the championship.

The move appears to be yet another act of protest against the crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran, which erupted following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was arrested for failing to wear a head covering.

Hundreds of protesters have been killed in the nationwide unrest, which has gripped Iran since September, including dozens of minors.

Several people have already been executed over their involvement in the protests and death sentences have been handed down to others.

In November, during the World Cup in Qatar, Iran’s national men’s soccer team refused to sing the country’s national anthem.

The team stood during the anthem before their opening match against England, but instead of singing the words, as is traditional, the players stared straight ahead.
