The government of Croatia has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.

The Croatian government noted that besides adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism, it is also adopting the organization’s definition of Holocaust denial and distortion, and its definition of anti-Roma racism and discrimination.

Croatia is scheduled to take over the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in 2023 and 2024. To that end, the government has established a National Coordination Body for the presidency of the IHRA.

“Ahead of the Croatian presidency of the IHRA, [in order to deal with] contemporary challenges opposing the distortion of the truth about the Holocaust and the suppression of antisemitism and anti-Roma racism, the government has established a National Coordination Body of the IHRA Presidency and the Secretariat of the IHRA Presidency,” the Croatian government said in a statement.

According to the IHRA, since joining the organization, “Croatia has established a network of teachers and professors committed to the subject of the Holocaust.”

“IHRA membership has also helped increase access to numerous and diverse Holocaust-related teaching resources for educators. Existing resources have also been upgraded in accordance with the highest educational standards. In terms of memorials, the Jasenovac Memorial Site has become one of the most prominent and important museums in Croatia, enjoying international respect and recognition.”
