Opposition leader Yair Lapid met on Sunday evening at his home in northern Tel Aviv with Arnon Bar-David, chairman of the Histadrut labor federation.
Bar-David came to the meeting at the request of Lapid, who is trying to recruit the Histadrut to the fight against the government's planned judicial reforms. If he succeeds - it will be a real tool in the fight, since the threat of a general shutdown of the economy is undoubtedly a significant lever of pressure on the government.
Channel 13 News reported that it is not at all certain that Bar-David will heed Lapid's call. The chairman of the Histadrut has his own "troubles", for example a new wage agreement that he wants to advance with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and an attempt to ensure that a mandatory arbitration law is not enacted, preventing a shutdown of essential services.
If Bar-David's efforts with Finance Minister Smotrich fail, then it is more likely that Lapid and others will succeed in recruiting the Histadrut to the fight against the judicial reforms.
The Histadrut said in response that Bar-David met Lapid as he periodically meets leaders from across the political spectrum. Lapid's office did not comment.
