The U.S. Mint launched a new $1 collector coin featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The coin bears Trump’s portrait alongside the inscription “In God We Trust," while its outer edge features the words “Liberty 1776-2026." The U.S. Mint said the special-edition coin was designed to capture “the spirit, pride, and heritage of a nation approaching its historic anniversary."
According to the Mint, the coin was created to commemorate the national milestone with a distinctive design intended to become a notable addition to modern collections. It was offered at $61 for a roll of 25 coins and $154.50 for a roll of 100 coins.
The first batch offered through the U.S. Mint’s website sold out within a short time, with the Mint reporting strong demand for additional coins.
The release has also drawn attention because it features the portrait of a living president. Federal law generally prohibits placing the portrait of a living president on U.S. commemorative coins. However, Trump’s congressional allies are seeking legislation that would permit his portrait to appear on a commemorative coin on a one-time basis.
Supporters of the proposal point to a 1926 commemorative half-dollar marking the 150th anniversary of American independence, which featured the portrait of then-President Calvin Coolidge. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said in May that he plans to issue a $250 banknote featuring Trump’s portrait.
