Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich published a personal message on Wednesday ahead of Passover, reflecting on the biblical Exodus and linking it to what he described as present-day “miracles" during the ongoing war.
In his post, Smotrich focused on the commandment “And you shall tell your son," connecting it to a personal family experience. He revealed that his son, Benayah , a soldier in the Givati Brigade, was seriously wounded while operating in Lebanon. He noted that Benayah underwent life-saving surgery and is now recovering, expressing gratitude for what he called an “open miracle." According to Smotrich, the piece of shrapnel removed from his son symbolically resembled the map of the Land of Israel.
“The Exodus from Egypt is not just a historical story," Smotrich wrote. “It is an ongoing, daily reality - a story of faith in the righteousness of our path and of responsibility passed down through generations for the existence, freedom, and independence of the people of Israel." Referring to his son’s injury, he added that the commandment takes on a deeper meaning this year - extending to “your sons."
He also highlighted the broader context of the war, saying his son and many others answered the call to defend the country. “A land we endured hardships to return to, and whose protection is the responsibility of all of us," he wrote.
Smotrich urged families to share not only the traditional story of the Exodus during the Seder, but also the story of the current generation striving to bring good to the world and defend Israel against its enemies, emphasizing the role of future generations who will continue that mission.
