Police on Thursday arrested two US residents studying in Jerusalem on suspicion of photographing a sensitive security facility at the city’s entrance.

The police have requested an extension of their detention for five more days in order to continue the investigation.

In recent months, several significant cases of espionage and contacts with Iranian intelligence operatives have been uncovered.

Last month, an indictment was filed against an Israeli citizen who immigrated from Iran in 1999, accusing him of contact with a foreign agent and passing information to the enemy. According to the indictment, the accused maintained ongoing contact with an Iranian operative, including during the Swords of Iron war and Operation Rising Lion, with the intent to harm national security.

In another case, an IDF soldier serving in a classified unit was charged in July with passing sensitive information to Iranian operatives in exchange for payment. The soldier allegedly provided videos of interceptions and documentation of missile strikes in Israel.
