The National Cyber Authority on Saturday sent a message calling for citizens to stop using the popular messaging app WhatsApp, saying, "The National Cyber Authority hereby orders that all computers be disconnected from WhatsApp and that you discontinue use of any nonessential location services."

Following considerable public consternation regarding the message, a clarification was issued: "The IDF and the National Cyber System clarify that the message sent out by the IDF Information Security Department was intended for reservists only. The message was sent as part of efforts to raise awareness and bring about safe conduct on the network. The IDF regrets the lack of clarity in the wording of the message."

"The message is not an order for civilians, but the IDF and National Cyber Authority recommend the following steps for your online safety:

"1. After using WhatsApp Web, close the browser-based application by logging into a mobile device, navigating to the 'linked devices' menu, and selecting your computer to log out of the browser application."

"2. Location permissions - We do not recommend disabling location services, but only to not frivolously grant permission to use them to applications that have no reason for it. The Home Front Command application should have location permissions enabled."
