President Isaac Herzog on Thursday called on the UN to stand with Israel against Iran and help prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Herzog made the call during his meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York.

“Met today with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres along with Israel’s Ambassador Gilad Erdan. I expressed my deep concern at the hostility towards Israel in UN bodies, seen in negative votes and a one-sided view of the conflict in our region,” tweeted Herzog.

“We expect the UN to stand resolutely with us against Iran - which calls publicly for Israel’s destruction - and to stop it acquiring nuclear weapons,” he added.

“I was joined by Leah Goldin, mother of Lt. Hadar Goldin who fell in Operation Protective Edge in Gaza and is still held by Hamas. We raised the need to return the Israeli prisoners and missing, as well as the war against terrorism,” wrote Herzog.

Ambassador Erdan also tweeted about the meeting, writing, “At the invitation of President Isaac Herzog, we were privileged to be joined at the meeting by Leah Goldin, the mother of soldier Hadar Goldin who was killed during Operation Protective Edge in 2014.”

“Hamas has refused to return his body, the body of soldier Oron Shaul, and Israeli civilians Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed who are still alive. Goldin urged the Secretary-General to use his office to help secure the release of Israeli prisoners from Hamas terrorists. We will not stop until our captives are free,” he added.
