MK Yitzhak Kroizer (Otzma Yehudit) was elected today (Wednesday) to be the coalition's representative on the judicial selection committee.

Kroizer became the only coalition candidate after MK Moshe Solomon (Religious Zionism party) withdrew his candidacy this morning.

The opposition suspended the negotiations at the President's Residence on the judicial reform issue last month after the coalition sought to delay the election of coalition and opposition representatives to the judicial selection committee. MK Karin Elharrar (Yesh Atid) was elected at the time to serve as the opposition's representative on the committee in a defeat for the coalition, while MK Tali Gottlieb (Likud) failed to secure enough votes to become the coalition's representative on the committee.

The opposition parties refused to continue with the negotiations as long as the judicial selection committee was not established and functional.

In response to the suspension of the negotiations, the coalition has pushed forward with parts of the judicial reforms, this week advancing a bill that would limit the Supreme Court's ability to apply the reasonableness standard to strike down government actions and Knesset laws.

It remains to be seen whether the election of MK Kroizer to the committee will compel the opposition parties to resume the negotiations at the President's Residence or if they will demand that the reasonableness standard bill be frozen first.
