US President Joe Biden was met with heavy criticism on Sunday evening after he tweeted that the Republican Party was responsible for the country’s ailing economy, including high inflation not seen in four decades.
“Republicans are doing nothing but obstructing our efforts to crack down on gas-price gouging, lower food prices, lower healthcare costs, and hopefully, soon, lower your prescription drug costs,” Biden tweeted.
Biden’s tweet was slammed by Republican lawmakers and economists who noted that the American public is struggling to cope with record gas and food prices as inflation continues to surge.
“Joe Biden believes that the American people are fools,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said on Twitter, responding to Biden’s claim.
Economist Brian Riedl chimed in, reminding Biden that the Democrats have control over Congress.
“Scapegoating. You have the House and Senate majority with reconciliation powers,” Riedl tweeted. “Republicans have no power to stop a unified Democratic party.”
Another Twitter user, Scott Presler, a conservative activist, pointed out that Biden “gave $54 billion to Ukraine, but forgot [the] US.”
According to the New York Post, Biden also faced widespread criticism for appearing to be contradicting a 2020 campaign tweet:
“It’s hard to believe that it has to be said, but unlike [then President Trump], I’ll do my job and take responsibility,” Biden wrote during the campaign.
