As part of Israel's current campaign to send a message to Hamas over the capture of one of its young soldiers, and in response to the daily terror its citizens have been subjected to, Israeli jets buzzed Syria's president, Bashar Assad, in his summer home in Latakia.

Assad has given refuge to Hamas leaders, such as chief honcho Khaled Meshal, and the Jews dropped in to say "hello."

A few days earlier, Arabs kidnapped and murdered another Israeli teenager, one of those "Jewish settlers" they like to speak of. I mean, after all, how dare a Judean (Jew) live in Judea?

I couldn't help but note the sickening irony, though most of the rest of the world surely didn't. You see, Hamas's patron saint, Sheikh Izzedine Al-Qassam, was also from Latakia. Like scores of thousands of other Syrians, he too poured across the border - Arab settlers, setting up Arab settlements in Palestine.

Sheikh Al-Qassam became Hamas's hero by butchering Jews, many who were themselves from Syria and elsewhere in the "Arab" world. But while the sheikh and his buddies would become known as "native Palestinians", Jews would be labeled "settlers".

The Records of the League of Nations Permanent Mandates Commission, and other solid documentation, noted these migrations, as well as those of many Arabs from other countries. (Yasser Arafat was born in Cairo, by the way.) So many Arabs were recent arrivals by 1948 that when the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) was created to take care of Arab refugees created by the Arab attempt to abort Israel's rebirth, the very word "refugee" had to be redefined. It was changed to accomodate those who had lived in the Palestine Mandate territory a mere two years.

There is no doubt that many of Hamas's current members - those who specialize in terrorizing Jews - are from families as "native" as their murderous sheikh.

The deeper message of all of this is lost to virtually all. Or, perhaps worse, many simply don't want to know the real story. Buying right into the Arab line, the media and others will simply continue stressing "settler" when reporting the next Jewish kid murdered by Arab settlers.

As if it really makes any difference to Arab terrorists which Jew they kill.

One thing's for certain, however. Blowing hot air and telegraphing punches will accomplish nothing with Arabs who have learned how to play the game, who learned about Israel's all-too-predictable responses. Bombing empty fields and creating sonic booms aren't going to fix the problem.

Indeed, the Arabs have now turned the current crisis around to blackmail Israel yet again to release hundreds of prisoners, many with Jewish blood on their hands.

When will Israel learn?

Israel must get itself a capital punishment policy for those who murder, attempt murder, or are accomplices to murder. And it must get rid of its own idiotic, ultra-left judges, who care more about such murderers than about the Jews they butcher. This will eliminate hundreds of live trades - as have already been made too often before - for the remains of Jews already slaughtered by the terrorists. How dumb is that?

Smart Jews? Yeah, right.

Why should millions of dollars be spent to keep those who plot the slaughter of innocents alive? Do Israel's Arab neighbors do such things? Does America? While some states don't have capital punishment, others do. My own state, Florida, certainly does.

Many Arab terrorists shouldn't be taken alive in the first place. If there's a "tough guy," armed and aiming to kill Jews, then Israel must see him as provoking its own version of Clint Eastwood's famous Dirty Harry line: "Make my day."

Israel gains nothing by trying to show the world how "enlightened" it is. And from the Arabs it gets the blackmail we are all seeing, yet again, right now.

Those who commit murder and terror, as well as those who support them, must be taken out en masse. Just ask President George W. Bush. Nothing short of this will work. And the Jews better wise up.
