Dozens of young haredi men listed as IDF deserters and draft evaders were arrested in recent days at the Ben Gurion International Airport as they attempted to leave Israel to spend Rosh Hashanah in the Ukrainian town of Uman.
According to the figures published by the Hifkadity Shomrim organization, approximately 70 out of the 80 haredi men currently detained in military jails are Breslov Hassidim, who have traditionally held an annual pilgrimage to the grave of Rabbi Nachman in Uman.
The organization, which operates an emergency phone hotline and a legal aid network for draft dodgers, called for prayers for the detainees' release.
Alongside its ongoing work in Israel, the organization has expanded its network to Uman.
For haredim who managed to leave Israel but are now at risk of arrest upon their return, an in-person consultation desk has been set up in Uman.
Breslov officials said that attorney Shlomo Haddad will hold individual guidance sessions on Monday at the Ashkenazi Kloiz in Uman to provide legal assistance and prevent mass arrests at Ben Gurion Airport and border crossings after the holiday.
