Nine seconds and 39 hundredths of a second - that is the astonishing time it took the Chinese robot “Tiangong Ultra" to complete a 100-meter race at the Robot Olympics, smashing the historic world record set by former Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
Another robot, named “Lightning," finished second in the race and also broke Bolt’s record, clocking in at 9.47 seconds. However, unlike the fastest man in history, both robots struggled to make a stylish stop at the finish line - and crashed.
The humanoid robot games are being held in China for the second consecutive year. Alongside an impressive opening ceremony, the event features a wide range of competitions beyond track events, including table tennis, Muay Thai, standing high jump and even soccer matches, complete with goal celebrations inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo.
A technology expert described the major leap forward: “Today, we are seeing machines achieve feats and even break the most extraordinary physical records that humans have reached so far. It shows that we are only at the beginning of an era that will take us to places where we will be left speechless by the unimaginable achievement of a machine surpassing a human."
