The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia continues to rise. Authorities in the country reported that at least 224 people have been killed so far, while more than 2,700 people are still listed as missing, as rescue teams continue searching for people trapped beneath the rubble.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country yesterday and caused widespread destruction, particularly in western Colombia. In the Valle del Cauca Department alone, 35 people were killed, approximately 700 others were injured, and 188 are listed as missing.
According to authorities, approximately 5,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in the earthquake, along with three hospitals that sustained significant damage.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said that the primary task at this stage is locating the missing and announced that security forces would be reinforced in the affected areas amid concerns about looting.
Alongside the rescue efforts, Israel has expressed its willingness to assist Colombia. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced that he had spoken with his Colombian counterpart and offered Israeli assistance.
“We are following the reports of the earthquake with concern. Israel is prepared to assist Colombia in any way necessary," he said.
