A loud explosion was heard Wednesday afternoon near Eilat, apparently from a rocket fired from Gaza, initial reports said.

Shortly afterwards, the IDF confirmed the launch, and said that the missile had fallen in an open area.

"A short while ago, one rocket was identified from the Gaza Strip toward Hevel Eilot Regional Council in southern Israel, which fell in an open area," the IDF confirmed. "According to protocol, an alert was activated on the Home Front Command app only in an open area."

Earlier on Tuesday, a rocket fired from Gaza activated air raid sirens in the Carmel region, near Haifa in northern Israel.

Shortly after the sirens were heard, the IDF confirmed: "Following the initial report regarding sirens that sounded in the Carmel area in northern Israel, one rocket was identified from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli territory, which exploded mid-air."
