Coalition chairman MK Ofir Katz (Likud) on Thursday announced a series of sanctions against MK Tally Gotliv (Likud), who defied coalition discipline and refused to withdraw her candidacy for the Judicial Selection Committee before Wednesday’s vote.
According to the Likud's decision, Gotliv will no longer serve as a member of the various Knesset committees, will not be able to bring forward bills and will not be permitted to speak on behalf of the Likud faction in the Knesset plenum.
Katz, who said that the sanctions were imposed on Gotliv "due to the serious and unprecedented violation of coalition and factional discipline", indicated that the sanctions will be in effect until further notice.
Gotliv's conduct led to the election of opposition MK Karine Elharrar (Yesh Atid) to the Judicial Selection Committee.
Gotliv refused to withdraw her candidacy for the position, despite pressure from the Prime Minister and her colleagues in the coalition. She ultimately received the support of only 15 MKs, compared to 59 MKs who opposed her candidacy. As such, the Knesset will be required within 30 days to hold repeat elections for the coalition's representative on the Judicial Selection Committee.
Gotliv reacted angrily to the sanctions against her, writing on Twitter, "Ofir Katz, number 32 on the Likud slate, a loyal soldier, decided to tell the media and not me that sanctions would be imposed on me, including my removal from Knesset committees. Well done Ofir. I have already inquired with the legal counsel who said that this is not a violation of coalition discipline. You acted in a thuggish and vindictive manner. My loyal friends in the Likud, please remind him that you see everything."
In a subsequent tweet, she said she would petition the Supreme Court against the sanctions.
"It is my duty and my right to do parliamentary work in the Knesset. The public pays me for exactly that. Shutting my mouth with draconian and uncontrolled sanctions is illegal. After investigating the unreasonableness and illegality of the decision in my affairs, I intend to submit a notice to the Knesset legal advisor before going to the Supreme Court. The Knesset is not the Wild West," wrote Gotliv.
