The Montreal police hate crimes unit is investigating a video posted to social media that showed two men ripping down Israeli flags outside a Jewish elementary school and then burning them, the Montreal Gazette reported.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Hebrew Foundation School in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

The Israeli flags had been placed alongside the school’s perimeter in celebration of Israel’s 75th birthday on Independence Day.

One of the vandals filmed the other one pulling out the flags and burning them. The video had the caption: “I am not afraid of Yahudis [Jews] and I do not care about any ‘promises.’”

The clip was originally posted to an Instagram account whose owner’s profile photo includes part of a Muslim prayer, The Suburban reported.

The school said in a statement that they contacted police and Federation CJA regarding the antisemitic vandalism.

“Rest assured that your children’s security is of the utmost importance to us. We are being guided and protected by various professional security groups,” they added.

A police spokesperson said on Thursday that the hate crimes unit was leading an investigation into the incident as a potential hate crime.
