A man broke into the hangar where the Air Force One presidential planes are housed on Monday, and was quickly spotted by a guard who opened fire on him.
The guard, who is a resident of the base, fired a single shot at the intruder, keeping him pinned down until security arrived to arrest him.
The man has not been identified and a motive has not been released, Fox News reported.
The two Air Force One planes are housed at the Joint Base Andrews in Maryland along with other presidential aircraft.
"A man gained unauthorized access to a JBA housing area. A resident discharged a firearm, security forces arrived on scene to apprehend the intruder and law enforcement is investigating the incident," Joint Base Andrews said in a Twitter statement.
Besides Air Force One, the base’s hangars contain a large “doomsday” airplane that would service as the president’s mobile command center in the event of a severe catastrophe, the Associated Press reported.
An investigation into the incident is taking place.
