The office of Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, clarified on Thursday evening that the Ambassador will not run in the Likud primaries or in the upcoming Knesset elections and that he will continue to serve as Israel's Ambassador to the UN and Vice President of the General Assembly.
"Erdan will continue to use his experience and capabilities to defend the State of Israel and its positions in the international arena," the office said.
In 2020, Erdan decided to accept the offer of then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to serve in a dual position as Israel's Ambassador to the UN and Israel's Ambassador to the United States.
In August of last year, Michael Herzog was appointed to replace Erdan as Israel’s Ambassador to the US, while Erdan remained in the post of Ambassador to the UN.
Erdan last month was elected Vice President of the UN General Assembly. He will begin this role in September when the 77th General Assembly convenes and will hold the position for a year.
As part of this role, Ambassador Erdan will chair General Assembly meetings and take part in setting the agenda for General Assembly deliberations.
