Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai (Labor) will demand the establishment of a ministerial committee for immigration and refugee absorption.
In a Saturday night statement, Shai said he will demand the government establish a ministerial committee which will determine Israel’s immigration policy, including on the absorption of refugees in light of the war in Ukraine.
Minister Shai intends to raise his proposal in the coming cabinet meeting on Monday, the statement said.
“Israel has no clearly defined immigration policy,” Shai said. “The Ukrainian refugee crisis requires the cabinet to pass a government resolution based on agreement between the different components of the government.”
“Israel must adapt itself to the new situation which has been created. The State of Israel, the state of the Jewish people, must extend its hand to the refugees in Europe. We cannot be apathetic to the humanitarian disaster unfolding there.”
