At least 20 people were killed in a fuel tanker explosion in Akkar in northern Lebanon overnight Saturday, Reuters reported, citing the Lebanese Red Cross.

At least seven people were injured in the explosion and were taken to local hospitals which are in dire need of donated blood, the Red Cross said.

Lebanon is currently experiencing a severe fuel shortage and the past week has seen multiple incidents of tankers being hijacked.

Hospitals have warned that they are low on fuel and may be forced to shut down.

"The Akkar massacre is no different from the port massacre," said former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri on Twitter, referencing last year’s explosion at Beirut's port and calling on Lebanese officials, including the President, to take responsibility and resign.

Lebanon has not had a government since the previous Cabinet resigned following the deadly port explosion last August. Over 200 people were killed in the blast, which also left thousands injured and devastated much of the city.

Hariri had ben tasked with forming a new government this past October but gave up the post when he failed to reach an agreement with President Michel Aoun on a Cabinet.

Aoun then tasked Najib Mikati with forming a new government.
